What qualifications are offered?
Six types of awards, currently validated by the University of Surrey, are available to students:
- HE Certificate in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission (Cert Th)
- HE Diploma in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission (Dip Th)
- Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission (BA)
- Postgraduate Certificate in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission (PG Cert)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission (PG Dip)
- Master of Arts in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission (MA)
On entry, if you are studying for one of these awards as part of your initial ministerial training, you will usually register for the award corresponding to the time for which your church authority has sent you to STETS, after account has been taken of any accredited prior learning claims.
The BA
Most students exit with the Diploma of Higher Education in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission on completion of HE1 and HE2 (total 240 credits – 120 credits at HE1 and 120 credits at HE2). However, the Course makes provision for students to exit with a Certificate of Higher Education in Christian Ministry and Mission on completion of 120 credits at Level One after 18 months at STETS.
It is possible for students exiting with the Diploma, to complete the remainder of the Degree as part of their post-ordination training. Separate arrangements and funding for this need to be made, in conjunction with your ordaining authorities.
Students with Accredited Prior Learning for HE1 complete HE2 and HE3 over three years and qualify for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission.
NB: From 2010 0r 2011 we expect to offer a revised Foundation Degree, with the option of ‘topping up’ at HE level 3 level to a BA Hons degree. There is also likely to be a change in our validating University.
The MA
Recent graduates in theology normally register for all or part of the MA in Theology for Christian Ministry and Mission. The MA is completed via part-time study over a period of three years, at a rate of 60 credits per year.
Students following the MA pathway for a shorter period than three years may still be able to complete the MA during this shorter period if they are eligible for AP(E)L credit, or they may exit with either the Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) or Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits).
